Headboards, why do we have them?
Historically headboards were used to protect the sleeper from cold draughts in the days of old and traditionally were constructed from wood. Headboards were attached to the head end of the bed and created an insulating gap between the bed and a cold wall, or were positioned to block the offending draught.
Over time headboards started to become a feature, more decorative and sometimes ornate. In more recent times headboards have been developed to serve practical uses. These include preventing the pillows falling on the floor or to provide storage ledges and or used as anchors to provide for lighting for reading etc.
Headboards have a practical application but this does not mean they have to be dull or uncomfortable.
