New season, new start!

Summer 2023 may be drawing to a close, but as autumn approaches and the new school year begins, it reminds us that fresh starts are here and exciting opportunities are on the horizon.

For Boringdon Hall Hotel and their award-winning Gaia Spa, there are new wellness rooms and suites that we are proud to have been involved with.

For us, our logo refresh will be launching very soon, and we’re excited to share that with you, along with the structure and direction that Niki’s Soft Furnishings will be taking in the future.

As the nights draw in, we also thought it would be a perfect time to look at making our curtains as energy-efficient as possible. So, we’ve got advice and tips on the best linings, poles, and accessories to help you achieve this. As well as plenty more inspiration and guidance on all things soft furnishings.

Let’s dive in!

The enchanted place on the hill

The 5-star luxury, Boringdon Hall Hotel and Gaia Spa is the perfect place to escape it all for a while! The roots of the name Boringdon date back to Saxon times and means ‘enchanted place on the hill’, which we think is a delightful description and truly fitting with this unique retreat.

We’ve just finished our project there, providing the soft furnishings for their new wellness bedrooms, as well as two of their suites. This included sourcing suitable fabrics that complied with fire safety regulations for curtains, voiles, electric roller blinds and cushions. We also sourced tub chairs and sofas that were also compliant.

With projects of this scale, there are always lots of planning meetings with the client to agree on designs and budgets. As the project progresses, we’re constantly in touch to confirm measurements and make adjustments, as there are inevitably minor tweaks that need to be made once the building work begins!

After hours and hours of making the voiles and curtains, we were ready for the installation phase. Our team was onsite with the carpet fitters, electricians, living wall installers and a whole host of other tradespeople working around each other. Even though lots was going on, the atmosphere was calm and professional.

Does that sound inviting?! Why not treat yourself and book a weekend spa break at this idyllic sanctuary?

Energy-reflecting curtains

Keeping unwanted draughts at bay can be challenging if you live in a listed or single-glazed property, have large picture windows or bi-fold doors, or can’t hang heavy-material curtains. We always love a challenge and have many valuable tips to help you create that sought-after, cosy atmosphere in your living and sleeping areas!

As the nights draw in, let’s look at how curtain linings and curtain architecture can help.

Linings

With up to 10 times more energy saving than conventional curtain lining material, this energy-reflecting blackout lining is a favourite at Niki’s Soft Furnishings.

We’ve seriously put it through its paces (we’ve stitched it, punched holes in it, folded it, and ironed it), and it never disappoints. ?

So, if you’re looking for a lining to help reduce your energy bills AND block out unwanted light, we highly recommend adding it to your curtains.

Our Top Tip

Before the weather turns chilly, it’s a good idea to look at your curtain linings and check:

  • Are they still in good condition?
  • Are they securely attached to your curtain material?
  • Are they up to keeping the cool air from entering your room and the warm air seeping out?

If not, get in touch to find out how we can help.

Poles and curtain headers

In our last newsletter, we looked at the vast array of curtain poles and accessories available to help you create your desired window dressing effect. If you missed it, you can catch up here. https://bit.ly/Curtainpolesexplained

Curtain poles don’t just add the ‘wow’ factor; they can also help reduce draughts. For example, a French pole allows the curtain to lie flush (with minimal gap) against the wall because the pole turns 90 degrees and is fixed to the wall. This can help lock in heat in rooms. They also look super stylish and create a voluminous stack back – stunning with extra-long curtains puddling on the floor!

Recessed curtain tracks allow curtains to meet the ceiling, preventing cool air from seeping over the top of your fabric and locking more warm air in your room. The position of curtain tape and the header you choose at the top of your curtains can also help curtains sit more securely to your chosen pole or track.

Valance and pelmets

Another clever way to keep draughts at bay (and keep rooms cooler in the summer) is to add a valence or pelmet to the top of your curtains. If you think these are a bit old-fashioned, think again! Pelmets can look modern and give a room that boutique-hotel vibe.
